Ms Amsterdam Grand World Voyage 2015 (Sydney to Dubai 41 days segment)

Tuesday 10 Feb 2015

The alarm clock went off at 2.45 am to give me time to get ready as my good friend Steve ‘Deckie’ Dendle was picking me up at 3.45 am to drive me to the airport to catch my flight to Sydney.

Everything ran like clockwork and I only had to sit down for 10 minutes before  they were calling my flight. It was a full aircraft and I would estimate 80% of the other pax would have been Chinese tourists. I watched a movie (Guerin) on my Tab to fill in the flight.

I had some coffee and a sandwich on arrival at Sydney Airport then caught the shuttle to the Cruise Terminal at Circular Quay.

Well Papaku got a Royal welcome back on the Amsterdam, (Sorry Dolly but anyone would have thought it was MY SHIP).

After lunch I went ashore to meet Larry a former work colleague from Cairns for coffee.

I was back on the ship for Happy Hour in the Crows nest.  As most of my friends were off at the Opera I had to join another table for dinner. This caused confusion with the temporary table mates as how could anyone who had only got on the ship a few hours ago know most to the staff and a good percentage of the guests. It was their first GWV, anyway we had heaps of fun and they wanted me to stay at their table for the rest of the cruise.

I went up to the Crows Nest for an after dinner drink but after a few as I was busy catching up with folk,

My friends Susan , Lynda and Russel returned back to the ship and that’s when the Party begun.

It was well after midnight by the time I got to bed.

Wed 11 Feb 2014

I had a great sleep in and a late brekkie in the dining room. I have my own Papaku brekkie table.

I had a nice restful day just catching up with folk and did not go ashore in Sydney like the majority of the other Pax.

After lunch I had my nana nap before going up to the Crows Nest Happy Hour and Sail away views of this great city. I actually ended up going to the real party on the aft Lido deck which was all decorated for the occasion.

The views with the setting sun and the light on the Opera House and on the Bridge and city skyline were just fantastic.

Debbie was playing the Grand piano out on the deck as we sailed out to sea.

Oh what a ‘You had to be there to experience it kind of night.’

Dinner was a fantastic fun filled meal with Linda, Susan and Russell. We were in no way the quietest table in the dining room.

We ended a beaut day with a few drinks in the Crows nest.

Thursday 12 Feb 2015

Today is a sea day as we cruise down along the coast towards Melbourne. It was a little windy and rainy. I got a shock when I got a letter from the Captain requesting I attend a special boat drill training session at 13.00 hours as I failed to attend the one the day before we sailed we sailed from Sydney.

As only less than 100 got on in Sydney there were no announcements for the drill as I had later discovered we were advised by letter along with many other letters I had not got around to reading. Anyway there were 12 of us naughty folk that had to do the drill and 10 of them like me were totally unaware of the yesterday’s drill.  I always take these drills seriously and felt most embarrassed for not attending.

A nice young lady officer led us through the drill and we were forgiven and it was all over in 7 minutes. I am back on the VIP list again now.

I had a light lunch at our “office” in the Lido with the gang and then went down for a nana nap.

There was a Captain’s welcome aboard pre dinner cocktail party for us new folk that joined the ship in Sydney.

Dinner was another fun experience with the gang then followed by a night cap in the Crows Nest.

Friday 13 February 2015

I awoke just as we were docking alongside the wharf and Melbourne Cruise Terminal. Wow what a beaut sunny and warm day Melbourne has turned on for our arrival.

After brekkie I went up on deck to take some photos of Port Phillip Bay and the nearby surrounds. At 9.30 am Frances my sister phoned me to say she and Reno had arrived at the coffee shop just outside the restricted Port area and were waiting for me there.

I met them and had coffee before bringing them on board for the day. We had a great day doing the Papaku tour of his ship. They now know where all the bars are, and are on first name basis with most of the bar staff. They have learnt many new tricks and were presented with paper flowers made out of napkins and other paper animals.

We had a fantastic lunch in the Pinnacle Grill and were very impressed with the service and the high quality of the food.
We continued with the tour of the ship after lunch and then we went up to the Crows Nest  for High Tea.

By this stage our great day was coming to an end and they had to depart the ship and hit the Friday afternoon rush hour traffic to make their way home. They were suggesting they stay on board and take over my cabin and I get off. I know they enjoyed their day aboard and are thinking of doing the Grand World Voyage next year.

Happy Hour I spent some time with Sir Dick before going down to get ready for dinner. Dinner was the usual great time with Susan, Linda and Russell.
We adjourned up to the Crows Nest for after dinner drinks and had another beaut time up there. Because we were going to the Central Australia time zone we had to wind the clocks back 30 minutes. 30 Minutes always gets the Yanks going as they are only familiar  with one hour time zone changes.

I called it a night just after midnight.

Saturday 14 Feb 2015     (St Valentine’s Day)

What a beautiful calm sunny sea day as we cruise from Melbourne to Adelaide.
I had a sleep in and late brekkie at the Papaku dining room table then adjourned to my cabin to get this blog up dated. Actually I have been so busy I have not had a chance to start on it until now. It is impossible to get work done in our ‘Lido Office’ because of all the jokes and fun that goes on.

I caught up with the mob and had lunch in our Lido office then went down for a nanna nap and to get ready for the big Valentines Dinner and ball.

What a great night we had so I will let the photos do the talking. I called it a night about 12.30 am.

Sunday 15 Feb 2015

I had a great light brekkie in the dining room and had to be down to meet up with the mob by 9 am as we were being met by our friends Colin and Wendy (Adelaide Locals) who took us to the Adelaide hills.

We visited a great Wildlife reserve at Mt Lofty and my Yank mates just fell in love with the Roos and the Koalas. Because of the high temps the Koalas were not avail to be nursed and photographed.

Then we were off to Handorf a small historic town that was settled by German immigrants back in the 1850’s.

We went to an old mill that had been converted into a Hotel for lunch. OMG I had simple fish and chips, well what a meal, it was so huge.

All of us had that after Christmas lunch over full feeling. We walked around and took in the arts and craft shops as well as all the local chocolate shops.

As it was Wendy’s Birthday we had arranged for her and Colin to come on board and celebrate by having dinner with us. Well what a great time we had and the Indonesian waiters all came by and sang Happy Birthday in Bahasa.

We then went on to continue the celebrations in the Crows Nest. It was also Marcel (the Asst Cruise Directors Birthday) I finally got to bed about 1 am.

Monday 16 Feb 2015

I had another Lido Brekkie as I had slept in and missed the dining room. I met up with some local friends for coffee and a catch-up chat for an hour before they had to leave for work.

On returning to the ship I was asked heaps of questions by some Yanks wanting just to go into Port Adelaide to do some shopping. I told them to wait 10 minutes while I got my gear and I would be their guide.

We had a fun day as I took them in on the train. They enjoyed the shopping before we went to the Newmarket Hotel for lunch. “The Newie” is the new name for this pub and the Salt and Pepper Calamari was to die for, OMG it was the best

Back on board for sail away festivities however as the cool breeze has developed I thought it better to stay sheltered in the Crows Nest and enjoy the views.
Dinner was another fun meal and I finished up the evening in the Crows Nest with a night cap.

Tuesday 17 February 2015

I had a sleep in and a late brekkie in the Lido with Linda on this our first of 2 sea days cruising towards Albany in West Australia.

It was so funny I introduced Linda to Vegemite and she loves it.

I met up with the Gang in the ‘Office’ on the Lido deck where we held court until after lunch.  The sea was calm with only a gentle rocking motion that made going for the nana nap very inviting. I had a good sleep and was late for Happy Hour.

The only reason I woke up was because one of the barmen phoned me to say Happy hour was nearly over and to wake up and catch the last part.

The bar was all decorated for the Mardi Gras party tonight.

Dinner was a fun time as all the Dining room staff was all in costume. I think it is better to let the photos do the talking on the party in the Crows Nest. It was a great night and our mob were the last to leave. Actually it was one of the best parties I have been to in the Crows Nest for a long time.

Tonight we have to put the time back by 90 minutes before going to bed.

Wednesday 18 Feb 2015

Today is the final sea day as we cruise towards Albany across the Great Australian Bight. The seas have been fairly for this part of the world.

Linda joined me for brekkie at the Papaku table in the dining room and of course she shared my Vegemite with me.

I went down to the office to get the following information on the cruise demographics you might like to know.
There are 24 nationalities on board with the major countries being:-
              Yanks                  720
              Canadians          118
              Poms                   37
              Aussies               28
              Dutch                  28

There are 20 President Club Mariners, 290 five star, 302 four star, 173 three star,116 two star, 7 one star and it is great to see 28 first time cruisers.
We held office on the Lido deck and the discussions were very lively with heaps of laughs. I had a beaut feed of fish and chips for lunch.

I guess by now you know this cruising is hard work  and yes I had to go off for the nanna nap.

The Crows Nest was unusually quiet for the first Happy Hour and even my friend Sir Dick was 30 minutes late as he had to see the computer guy as his laptop is doing silly things.

Dinner was the usual great time at our table, I think the officers and crew like coming over to join in all our laughter. I understand a couple of boring old farts on a table for 2 nearby have asked and were moved to a quitter part of the dining room.

After dinner when I went down to clean my teeth for some reason I started getting undressed so I decided to have an early night and was in bed by 10.pm.

Thursday 19 Feb 2015

I awoke to find us nearly in the Port of Albany and the bonus was my phone was working which allowed me to get up to date with the emails and Facebook before I went up to Brekkie.

Linda joined me for brekkie at the dining room Papaku table. She is right into Vegemite now and really enjoys it. We arranged to meet up at 9.30 so she, Russell and I caught the shuttle bus into the lovely old town of Albany. Our first stop was Coles, then Target and Kmart.

I was amazed at the number of American ladies buying up on clothing at the end of summer sales. I commented to one lady with her loaded trolley how most Aussies when in the States buy up on the cheap clothing and this was like a role reversal. She said clothes here in the end of summer sales were a bargain as the States would be coming into Summer when the ship returned in May.

We had so much fun in this very friendly town and made it to the pub and I introduced them to FourXXXX Gold (the Queensland Beer) and we had a snack.

One gift shop even had St Pat’s party decorations so we stocked up for the 17th March. We even bought up on Vegemite for Linda before returning to the ship by mid-afternoon.

No nanna nap today as I had to go the Crows Nest for Happy Hour and obtain the best views as we sailed out of the harbour and into the King George Sound.
Inner was the usual fun time, then it was off to the show to see the extremely talented Aussie Boys for their last show on the ship.

I called it an early night and was in bed by 11 pm.

Friday 20 Feb 2015

I had a fantastic 8 and a half hours sleep so there was a bit of a rush to meet Linda for brekkie at 8 am. I arrived at the dining room to be greeted with “Selamat Pagi Papaku, hurry as there is a beautiful young lady at your table eating all your Vegemite”.

After brekkie I came back to the cabin to get laundry organised and catch up with this update.

I had the wine tasting to go to at 11 am and OMG the wines selected were the worst I have ever tasted at one of these occasions.

I went up to hold court with Sir Dick at the Lido bar before having a late lunch and then the Nana nap.

The Happy hour at the Crows Nest was very quiet with only a few sitting at the bar.

Then it was time to get ready for the Aussie Swagman dinner in the Pinnacle Grill. Well what a night that turned out to be. We ate Crock, Roo, Emu and Lamb washed down with great Aussie wines.

The Port at the end was to die for. We had a beaut time and at the end of the meal we were presented with our own Koala.

We finished the night with a few night caps in the Crows Nest.

Sat 21 Feb 2015

We were already berthed in Fremantle when I woke up at 6 am. It was a fantastic sunny and clear day and the temp was a little coolish for me. I had brekkie with Linda and we had heaps of laughs reliving the dinner last night.

I took some of the bar staff to lunch at the E Shed Markets just a short 5 minute walk from the ship.

We had a great time and after lunch some had to get back to the ship to start work and the others came with me into town for a look around.

The free Wi-Fi was very good just outside the town hall. We caught a Tram (shuttle bus) back to the ship. Fremantle is a fantastic city and heaps of old restored buildings.

After Happy Hour there was only Linda and I for dinner which was fun as there was an Aussie BBQ up on the Lido the dining room was very quiet.
I made the mistake of going to the OB (Ocean Bar) for a night cap as I ended up having a late night.

Sunday 22 Feb 2015

I joined Linda for brekkie in the dining room and we decided we would catch the train into Perth and have a look around.

Talk about a fun day, the local tourist info folk arranged for one of the Trams to go out of its way and drop us off at the railway station so that was bonus Number 1.

The train was ready to depart when we arrived at the station and we enjoyed the great ride into the Capital.

I have always loved Perth since the first time I visited the city over 45 years ago. It is a very clean and modern city and the weather was brilliant. As we only had limited time we got on the yellow free sightseeing bus and did a 40 minute tour.

We found a nice place to have lunch and a glass of red before it was time to catch the train back to Fremantle to re-join the ship.

We had a mandatory lifeboat drill before sail away. I enjoyed the sail away views at Happy Hour in the Crows Nest.

Dinner was the usual fun time and of course we were one of the last tables to leave the dining room.
After dinner I decided to have an early night.

Monday 23 Feb 2015

The Captain was on the PA at 7.15am to announce he had to abort the entrance to the fairway marked narrow dredged channel to our anchorage at Geraldton because of the strong winds.

We are now on our way to Benoa Bali and arrangements have been confirmed for us to have our berth at the cruise terminal due to our early arrival. What a bonus.

Of course there were the complaints by some of the old farts because their whole cruise has been spoilt because of this port cancellation. Most of them had not even heard of Geraldton until a few days before.

One old girl was complaining to me in the lift, I shut her up by saying I totally agree with the Captain and his call to protect the safety of the ship and the passengers. She went on and on so I asked her did she want to spend some days stuck in Geraldton aground that could have been a possibility had the Old Man not made the decision to abort.

We had a great time in the Lido office before lunch and even though the wind was behind us the seas were fairly smooth. Actually it was a sunny warm enjoyable sea day.

I had a good 2 hour nanna nap and went to see the Computer Man as when I left home I grabbed the power lead for my little Toshiba laptop by mistake because at the last moment I decided to take my large laptop on the cruise. The transformer on the lead was not strong enough to full charge the big fella and I was always getting messages that the battery was very low. The guy was great and exchanged my transformer for a bigger one so all is well in the computer department again now.

Well I missed the first Happy Hour so I got many ‘please explains’ from other pax and the crew.

Dinner was the usual fun time and I made up for missing Happy Hour with a few night caps in the Crows Nest.  By golly I nearly forgot to tell you about the new Band that came on in Fremantle that will play in the Crows Nest each night. Well they are excellent and are very versatile. So everyone is very happy.

Tuesday 24 February 2015

I did brekkie with Linda in the dining room and then got ready for another sunny and warm sea day.

The future port information talk in the main theatre was very interesting and informative.

I wore a tank top up to the Lido Office as I wanted to catch some sun. OMG did some folk give me a ragging. I think many were just jealous of my perfect athletic physique.

One of the lido chefs made me up some Tempura vegetables for lunch and they were yummy.

Sea days are so restful and busy I enjoyed a long nana nap and just made it to happy hour in time to order the cheap drinks.

Tonight was a formal night and oh no! my laundry was not back so I created a new fashion by wearing a Black and white batik shirt with a gold bow tie as my formal shirts were not available.

It was a fun meal and I had an early night after only 2 night caps and in bed by 11.30 pm.

Wed 25 Feb 2015

Today is the final sea day before we reach Bali and what a perfect clear sunny calm day it was. In the Brekkie in the dining room with Linda and I holding court with the excited staff as many of them were going to see family in Bali tomorrow. Some would be meeting their babies for the first time.

We had a great session in the Lido office and I even took the chance to get some sun by wearing a tank top.

I had a beaut stir fry lunch before going to have a rest before Happy hour in the Crows Nest. The new band is great and proving very popular with the guests.
After dinner I had only one night cap as I wanted to be fit and healthy for Bali tomorrow.

I got a message from Made to say his dad had taken ill and at this stage he would not be able to meet me and show me around in Bali like he did last year.

Thurs. 26 Feb 2015

We were already docked at the Benoa terminal in Bali when I woke up. At brekkie Linda invited me to join her, Russell and Susan and go out with Mr K (Ketut) who was going to show them around. Ketut was a former dining room manager on this ship and we all knew him from previous cruises.

When we came out of the terminal I exchanged money and to my surprise a lady had a large colourful bird that wanted to get its photo taken in my shoulder. I was a bit nervous because of its claws, but my concerns were unfounded and the bird was very gentle.

What a perfect host and tourist guide Mr K was and we drove for hours seeing parts of Bali that the usual tourist coaches don’t go to. Beautiful lakes, old volcanoes, rice paddies and village markets were just some of the attractions we experienced.

We stopped for local coffee and snacks at a great place offering fantastic views over a tropical valley. In the afternoon we visited the Monkey forest of Sangeh.

This was a fantastic experience having monkeys climbing all over me. The photos tell the story.

The late afternoon traffic back to the ship was a nightmare and bumper to bumper with what seemed like a million motor bikes weaving their way between the cars, trucks and busses.

We got back to the ship just after 6 pm and made it to the Crows Nest to entertain the other guests with our animated stories of the day’s adventures and especially the monkeys.

We went to the Canaletto for a very enjoyable dinner before one nightcap in the Ocean bar before calling it an early night at 11.30 pm. Don’t forget I didn’t have a nanna nap.

Fri 27 Feb 2015

As we had all arranged to meet up at 10.30am, Linda and I went outside to the local markets just after brekkie. What fun, with all the bartering and getting all the bargains.  It was so hot and humid.

As Mr K was taking other guests out today he met us with his wife and 6 month baby and to introduce us to a driver he had arranged to show us around for today.

By about 11 am we were in a nice car with Komang our driver for today. He was a nice young fellow and took us to a coffee factory where we sampled the coffee and the others bought gift packs to take home.

I cannot take food back to Australia so I didn't buy. The coffee was Divine and I never knew there were male and female coffee beans. Of course the male ones make the best coffee and the rubbish served by Starbucks is made from the female beans. Naturally my female Yankee friends wanted the best and bought the Male beans to take home.

Komang then took us to a very good Indonesian Art  shop so we spent a few bucks there buying up on everything from masks, jewellery, clothing and carvings. It was fun and in the air-conditioning out of the heat.

Then we were off to A’roma Kampoeng Seafood right on the beach front at Jimbaran Bay Kuta.

What an experience and we invited Komang to join us for the meal. He was so excited as this was the first time a client had asked him to join them for a meal.

We each choose our live seafood to be cooked, and may I say the squid was to die for. OMG the meals were so large so we got the restaurant to do up a big doggie bag for Komang to take home to his family. While eating we were entertained by beach musicians that were very good.

The views were excellent and after a few hours and some Bintang (local Beer) it was time to go back to the ship after another most enjoyable in beautiful Bali. It was sad to say goodbye to our new best friend Komang, who I think enjoyed the day as much as we did.

Another day with no nana nap, but I guess some times one has to make some sacrifices. We did the usual things like pre-dinner drinks and went back to the dining room for dinner.
I called it a day about 11.30 after a few night caps in the Ocean bar and Crows Nest.

Sat 28 Feb 2015

Today is a sea day as we cruise towards Semarang (Java) and what a very calm warm and sunny day it has turned out to be. After brekkie with Linda I had some Papaku time and did some work catching up on emails and FB etc.

I went up to the Lido Office as we were having a meeting with the gang to plan some of the future shore excursions. I had a beaut roast chicken and salad lunch and a wine before going down for the nana nap.

I just woke up in time to catch the last of Happy Hour in the Crows Nest. I had drinks with my new Pommy mates (John and Christine) in the Ocean Bar before dinner.

Dinner was the usual fun time with the gang and we were the last to leave the dining room. I had a few night caps in the Crows Nest before going to bed about 12.30ish.

Sunday 1 March 2015

I had brekkie alone as Linda had gone on an early shore excursion for the day. OMG it was hot, smoggy and humid outside.

Late morning I met up with Redal and Jayson some of the Lido bar staff and got the shuttle into the city. What traffic congestion we experienced on what should have been a short ride took us over 35 minutes to get into the city.

As the boys had time restraints because of work we only had time to go to a Japanese café for a quick meal.  What a meal, it was great and for the 3 of us including drinks it only cost just under $14 Australian.

Anyway we had a great time and had rush back to get the shuttle in order for the guys to be back for their duties.

There was a sail away party with free beer wine and soft drinks, well you should have seen it, it was crowded and the Ice Water Brigade were loading themselves up with drinks and taking them back to their cabins then would be back and get more. It was like watching relay teams competing to see how much free grog down to their cabins in the 2 hours of the sail away.

Yes I do enjoy a free drink, but I was disgusted by the greedy behaviour of these hypocritical old farts, so I went up to the Crows Nest and paid Happy hour prices and enjoyed the sail away views in air conditioned comfort. (I didn't have a free deck out on the deck as I didn't want to be crushed in the stampede.) I have to say the beverage team need to be congratulated for the time and effort they put into setting up and decorating the temporary bars.

Tonight we invited John and Christine (My new Pommy friends) to join us at dinner. I think we just about wet our pants from laughter, Oh it was fun and everyone had a great night with John telling us stories in his Yorkshire accent.

I only had one night cap in the Crows Nest and called it an early night just after 11 pm.

Monday 2 March 2015

My young lady cabin attendant was having her family visit the ship today as we are in her home port of Jakarta so just after 10 am the excited lass was knocking on my door to introduce her 18 month old boy and her parents to Papaku.

I had some gifts for the little boy and it is also great to meet the families of the staff.

I was then thinking I would just get the shuttle into the Mall and return just to get off the ship as I have been to Jakarta many times before. I met up with Redel, Marlon, Paul and Jason just before leaving so we decided we would all go together and go to a Chinese restaurant for lunch.

What a great meal we had and the price was not a strain on the wallet. Jason and Paul did not have to hurry back to the ship so they stayed on with me and we tried to use up my remaining local money. I bought a Harley Davidson Watch for 100,000 Rupiah (9 bucks Aussie) so the guy took it out the back to shorten the band, set the time and date. He returned it to me in a beautiful gift box so I was feeling very pleased with this great deal.

Back on the ship I thought I would wear it up to Happy hour and show it off.

Wrong, Wrong I had been diddled the band had not been shortened, the time and date were wrong and the little winder was not there. I think the one I had chosen was substituted, Oh well *hit Happens.

There was another sail away party on deck 3 as we left Jakarta so all the non-drinkers were there to stock up on their wardrobe supplies. It was so funny when they were asked for their cabin number so the drinks could be charged. Well I’m told all of a sudden about 80% of them were suddenly not thirsty and did not purchase any drinks.

I of course was up in the Crows Nest enjoying the views and paying happy hour prices.
After dinner had a night cap in the Ocean Bar and was in bed by 11.30 pm.

Tuesday 3 March 2015

Today was a fun day as we had the King Neptune ceremony as we crossed the Equator. Even the Old Man (The Capt) ended up in the pool. Everyone seemed to get into the spirit of the celebrations.

After lunch the clocks went forward by an hour and that stuffed up my nanna nap. Thank God for my unakku in the Crows Nest as they rang me to wake me up ten minutes before happy hour. Oh Lord you should have seen Papaku move, I made it in time to get my orders in.

Dinner was a formal optional dress Asian night.

I got into the spirit and dressed up looking  informal Chinese. Our table was hosted by Thom and Tina the future cruise advisors and the conversation was interesting and lively.

I finished the evening saying good bye to my staff friends that were going home tomorrow in the Crows Nest and the Ocean Bar.

I called it an early night just after midnight as I wanted to be fresh and well for our first day in Singapore.

Wed 4 March 2015

I did brekkie with Linda at our new table which is much better as it is a four seater and is only set for the 2 of us.

Linda, Susan, Russell and I met up at 10.30 am to go ashore in Singapore. We caught the train to the station for Little India where the women found every dress, shoe and sari shop. It was good having a look around. After heaps of shopping we got the train to China Town. I always like Chinatown and the shopping is excellent.

Late afternoon we returned to the ship for hot dogs and a Singapore sling.

Betsy and John came on board about 7.30 pm as my guests for dinner. John and Betsy knew many of the crew so it was like a welcome back kind of night. We started with drinks in the Lido Bar then went to the dining room for a fantastic dinner.

After dinner it was quick drinks in the Ocean Bar and finished the night in the Crows Nest. It was great to catch up with them again. They enjoyed the meal and commented that the food, service and crew were much better om the HAL ships than on the MSC ship they had just left.

I think it was just after midnight when I saw them off the ship.

Thur 5 March 2015

I woke just in time for Brekkie with Linda. The other kids were planning to go to the Marina Bay Sands Hotel rooftop for lunch which I have been to many times before so I decided to go back to bed before getting this email up to date.

I had a Papaku day to myself and only went off the ship to buy a few things in the fantastic cruise terminal shopping complex.

Mama Dolly and I had some fun at lunch time in the Lido. When we get together we always provide entertainment to others around us.

The evening sail away on the Lido pool aft deck was interrupted by a sudden tropical downpour of rain and was moved to the Crows Nest. We were invaded by these ‘drowned rat’ looking folk crowding our peaceful bar and blocked out the views so we couldn’t see out the windows when the rain stopped. What a sight it is as we leave this very busy and congested port.

I met a lovely couple from Scotland at the bar and we chatted for a while as we sailed out of Singapore and into the Malacca Strait.

Dinner was the usual fun time and I was happy as they are now serving me an Aussie Shiraz as part of my wine package. I only had a nightcap in the Crows Nest before calling it an early night just after 11 pm.

 Friday 6 March 2015

We were already docked at Port Klang the port for Kuala Lumpur when I woke at 7.30 am. It was already very warm and humid when I went out on the deck as I made my way up to brekkie. Linda was doing a tour so I had the table to myself but was kept busy by the staff coming up to me about going into the city.

The Port provided a free shuttle to the Bukit Tinggi Mall which was 40 minutes away. It was a very comfortable coach ride. After spending about an hour in the huge mall looking around I caught the shuttle back to the terminal. There were souvenir shops so I bought another t-shirt.

OMG it was so hot and humid on the Lido when I had my late lunch. I had 3 glasses of iced water to try to compensate for all the perspiration. My cool cabin and bed made a most welcome climate for my nanna nap.

We had Nikki the Events Manager as our guest at the table for dinner.

It was a great night and we all enjoyed her company and stories.
I called it a fairly early night about mid night after a night cap in the Crows Nest.

Saturday 7 March 2015

There was no berth available when we arrived at Penang so we had to tender into the dock. As usual I love Penang and was taking some of the boys to an Irish Bar and Restaurant only a short distance from the terminal. Well to cut a long story short the Irish place was closed and looked like it had been for some time.

Then the Papaku walking tour began of Little India and China town in very hot and humid conditions. We found a Chinese café that only served English food which we thought strange but it was air conditioned and had free Wi-Fi. The food was good with a hint of Indian flavour.

The boys had to be back to start work on the ship at 2 pm.

In the meantime a berth had become available so when we got to the dock we had to wait for the ship to come alongside. Anyway the guys were back and at work on time.

Sir Willy and Sir Raymond were standing on the deck when the ship docked looking like school teachers checking on late students.

I didn't have time to have a nana nap so just had a shower and got ready for Happy hour.

The gang and I went to the Canaletto for dinner.
It was a great night and we finished it off in the Crows Nest.

Sunday 8 March 2015

The clocks had to be put back an hour during the night so I had an extra hour in bed. When I went up for brekkie the ship was being reversed along the 3 km channel to the dock. It was funny to be sitting in the dining room and looking out as if we were in the Crows Nest.

Apparently the Phuket swing basin had silted up and the ship would not have been able to turn around. All I can say the ‘Old Man’ did a good job with this reverse park.

I had brekkie with Linda before she went out on her day tour. I caught up with emails and Facebook before meeting the guys (my body guards) for our trip into town. When we organised a driver with a van to show us around for the day we found our numbers had grown to 7 but not to worry there was still heaps of room in the van. First stop was a seafood place where we had a beaut feed of prawns, squid and fish.

After lunch the driver took us for a drive the city, but being Sunday most places were closed.

As some of the guys had to be back on duty by 2 pm we went back to the ship and the guys not having to start took me to the markets on the wharf and we had a few beers and a snack.
Boy oh boy it was a hot and humid so I had to have a shower before the sail away in the Crows Nest. As it was a clear sunny day the views were fantastic as we headed out of the port.

Dinner was great and as everyone was tired from their various day tours we didn’t g up to the Crows Nest however I had one night cap in the Ocean Bar, and was in bed before 10.30 pm.

Monday 9 March 2015

We had an extra 30 minutes sleep as the time had to be put back by half an hour. Peter joined Linda and I for Brekkie and it was good to catch up with him.

I will let you into a secret; I’m going to get dressed up as St Patrick for the St Paddy’s day celebrations on the 17th March so the work had to start on the costume. I have now with the help on Linda, made the Mitre. It looks great. With the help of many of the officers I have been loaned materials and other gear to put everything together.

Today is a sea day so after my Mitre making efforts I went up to ‘the office’ but nobody was there. The Lido deck was being set up with a tropical fruit stand. Well the fruit went down well and some I was trying for the first time. I enjoyed it so much I went back for seconds.

I had a small lunch of chicken and salad with some sweet potato chips with a glass of wine before going down to have a nanna nap.

The early Crows Nest happy hour was a ton of fun as Sir Dick and I were joined by Vicky and Joan. The new band gave “G’Day G’Day” a spin as they have been rehearsing it for the past few days.

I had a nightcap or 2 in the Crows Nest after dinner so it ended up being a late night.

Tuesday 10 March 2015

The ship was already docked in the Port of Thilawa when I woke up at 7 am. This port seems to be miles from anywhere so the port authority are running shuttle busses to take folk from the ship to the port limits, then there is the hassle of getting a cab into the city.

It was very hot and humid and a little too warm to sit out in the Lido deck area for too long. Some of the guys were going out to the Port limits on the shuttle during the break mainly to purchase local sim cards. I gave Jason some money to get me one also which I now have installed on the old mobile.

We set out on the tour for the 90 minute drive into the city, well the living conditions in the ‘shanty’ towns were an eye opener and I wondered how they could survive in the dry dusty conditions. As we got closer to the city the conditions improved a little.

The river sunset cruise was fantastic and the cooler breeze on the river was a relief. We were served snacks and drinks as we took in the views and witnessed the busy movements of the water taxis crossing this wide waterway. I was amazed at the size of the port complex and the amount of cargo ships loading and unloading their diverse goods.

As the sun set the colours on the sky line of buildings and cranes changed dramatically.

We finished the evening by going to a Thai restaurant for dinner. The meal was excellent and everyone seemed to enjoy the 8 course dinner.

We got back to the ship after 10 pm so I went up to the Crows Nest for only one night cap as I have to be up early in the morning for an eight o’clock day tour.

Wed 11 March 2015

As we had an early start I had a room service brekkie before meeting Susan for our tour to the Shwedagon Pagoda and the markets.

The bus ride into town takes about 90 minutes and the young lady guide was excellent. The countryside was very dry and the locals are looking forward to the overdue rain. Even the buffalo looked like they needed a good drink of water.
The Pagoda was a fantastic experience and I was amazed how large the complex was. It covered an area of 14 acres and I have never seen so much gold in my life before.

Somehow I got separated from the group and a pagoda guide gave me my own tour and explained everything to me. The time we were there was only an hour which was not enough to see everything in detail. The photos give some insight of this very large complex. The guide returned me to the meeting point to meet up again with my tour.

I walked miles in bare feet and wore jeans and a long sleeve shirt to cover knees and elbows. I was wringing wet with perspiration as the temp was in the high 30s (over 100F).

Then we were off to the Markets to look at the goods there and of course they dropped us off at the entrance to the jewellery and gems section. I now have a nice silver ring with a jade stone for my little finger.

The tour of the downtown area was good and offered an insight to the progress this country making as it transitions from being a closed border nation under military rule to now a modern open country.

The long coach ride back to the Ship got us back for a late lunch.

I had a shower and long nana nap which resulted in me getting to Happy hour just before it finished. The new band has perfected Sir Dicks song where everyone claps and calls out Salt Salt Salt. Well Dick was away on a tour so we had everyone calling out G’Day G’Day G’Day instead of salt.

We had another great dinner and compared stories from our various day tours. We adjourned up to the Crows Nest for some well-earned night caps.

Thursday 12 March 2015

I slept in and went up to a late brekkie as I was not going ashore today. It was another hot and humid day as we prepared to leave the port.

Because of tides the ship left the wharf just after mid-day and we anchored in the river waiting for the high tide to enable the ship to navigate the silted up river out the open sea.

I was up in the Crows Nest when we finally got underway and experienced a fantastic sunset.

Dinner was fun as the Poms sat at my table with me because the others had gone to the Pinnacle Grill.

WE adjourned to the crows nest for a nightcap and ended up helping the crew decorate the bar and lounge for the white ball tomorrow night.

I called it a night just before midnight.

Friday 13 March 2015

It was a very calm sunny sea day and the temp seemed a little lower with a gentle breeze. After brekkie Linda and I the finishing touches to my costume for St Pats Day.

Late morning I made it to the Lido deck and enjoyed the tropical fruit being served.

I even had 2 coconuts to drink the milk from. After lunch it was down to the cabin for a long nanna nap.

I wore a conventional tux to dinner as I don’t have a white jacket for the white night.

The Crows Nest was crowded for the White Night party and everyone was having a great time.

I adjourned to my cabin early at 11.30pm.

Sat 14 March 2015

Today is another calm sea day as we head towards Colombo, Sri Lanka.

It was a very restful day and the excitement came when the horse races were held just after lunch. There were 3 races so I had No.3 the Green horse in each race. The betting units were $3 each so I invested a total of $9 on the races. Green won in the second race but as it was one of the favourites the payout was only $10.12.

Papaku was very excited with the huge win.

I then had my well-deserved nana nap for 2 hours before going up to happy hour after I got a wakeup call from the bar staff.

The new band have perfected G’Day G’Day and the bar staff and many of the guests joined in the singing.

I joined John and Christine (the Poms) for pre-dinner drinks in the OB (Ocean Bar) which has become a regular habit of late. We always have a beaut time with Marlon and Leo the barmen.

After dinner I went straight down to my cabin and was in bed just after 9.30 pm.

Sunday 15 March 2015

I was up wide eyed and well for the ships arrival Colombo, Sri Lanka on this very hot and humid fine morning. I did early brekkie with Linda and later went out to check out the market stalls on the wharf.

OMG it was so hot and as I recall from last time I was here not to buy in the morning as the best prices are just before the ship sets sail.

I met up with Linda and Susan and instead of going to the Lido deck for lunch and a drink we went to the Ocean Bar for a drink and sat in the Lido for lunch to escape the heat of the open deck.

After lunch we headed out into the heat to do some more shopping on the wharf side markets. I only bought a heap of fridge magnets to give out to the bar staff.
It was beaut to get back to the ship have a shower and a nanna nap.

The sail away was fantastic as we had to reverse out from the wharf for some distance to the swing basin to turn around and head out to sea. There was a beautiful red sunset that offered a fantastic photographic opportunity.

Overall I was impressed in the improvements and new infrastructure that have taken place since my last visit 2 years ago to Colombo.

Monday 16 March 2015

Today is a perfectly calm sunny sea day as we cruise towards Cochin India.
After brekkie with Linda I did the final touches to the St Pat’s costume before going up to the Lido ‘Office’ to meet the gang.

I haven’t mentioned before but since we left Singapore we have been in Code Red as many of the pax and crew have contacted GI. GI is a very infectious and contagious condition with folk getting stomach cramps, vomiting and the runs. The poor crew have been working day and night in sanitising the ship for the past week or so.

The Captain yesterday urged anyone with the GI systems to see the medical centre and go into quarantine for a few days to stop the spread. Self-service in the Lido restaurant has been suspended. I hope it is contained soon and we can return to normal.

I met up with the Poms for pre-dinner drinks in the Ocean Bar and the good thing about Monday nights are the bar snacks are caviar. I then went to dinner with them on level 4 and as usual had a very enjoyable meal with great company.

After dinner I went to see the show which was Ukebox from Liverpool. This talented group of five young blokes made up the all singing, all strumming, ukulele band.

I headed off to bed after the show as I wanted to be in top form for my feast day (St Pat’s Day) tomorrow.

Tuesday 17 March 2015

Linda and I went up for an early brekkie as she was going on a day tour this morning. I met up with my body guards (Marlin and Jason) later in the morning to go out on the town.
We hired a Tutt Tutt for the day at a princely price of $10 for the 3 of us. It was so much fun with the 3 of us squashed into the back seat as we bounced along the bumpy road into town. Naturally the driver wanted to take us to shops where he was going to get a kick back for taking us there.

I enjoyed going to the laundry and seeing the labour intensive way of washing without machines. The irons had coal burning inside them and I even had a go at Ironing with this heavy prehistoric coal burning iron.

We went to temples, churches, spice shops, sari shops and the fish markets before going to find a Chinese restaurant for lunch. Well this is where the fun begun as we were taken to every type of Indian food place.

In the end we went to a place that had about 3 Chinese meals hidden in the menu. We even had a local Kingfisher beer that was served in coffee mugs. The reason for the mugs is that he didn't have a liquor licence so the beer had to be camouflaged and was not that cold.

The meal was not too good as everything had a bit of a curry flavour. Just imagine garlic prawns in curry…. Yucky.
Anyway it was a cheap meal and the total bill came to $27 and we had free Wi-Fi there so that was a bonus.

We got back to the ship just in time for Happy Hour and when we got out of our Tutt Tutt, John and Christine also arrived at the same time so we went up to the Crows Nest for a well-deserved drink.

I later called in to the sail away party that was playing trad Indian music and no Irish music so I only had a glass of iced water and headed off to get ready for the huge St Paddy’s dinner and later celebrations.

I was dressed as St. Patrick in my robes and then proceeded to call into each bar so folk could get photos with me. Many thought I was Pope John Paul 2, so I had to correct them. It was a fun night and I even did a lap of both dining rooms.

Even the Captain asked for my blessing. I had a dance with Mum Dolly and later another dance in the Crows Nest with Heidi. Boy oh boy it was hot under the robes so at 11.30 I went down and changed. I will let the photos do the talking.

I came back up for a final night cap in the Crows Nest. It was so great to see the large number that were celebrating and staying up late as the crew put so much time and effort into decorating the dining room and Crows Nest for such occasions.

Wednesday 18 March 2015

Thank God today is a sea day and we can charge up the batteries and rest up a bit. I was greeted by folk I had never spoken to before as I arrived at brekkie. Old and younger they all seemed to enjoy my act as St Patrick last night.

After brekkie I went back to bed until late morning and then joined the gang for lunch on the Lido deck. It was a very warm day however with the breeze caused by the moving ship it was very comfortable.

Everyone had to front the Indian Immigration Officers for a face to face passport and visa check.

There was only Susan and I at the table for dinner as Linda and Russell had gone to a curry night at the Pinnacle Grill.

I had an early night with only one night cap before bed.

Thursday 19 March 2015

We were arriving in the Port of Mumbai when I awoke. It was interesting watching the berthing procedures as we had our brekkie. After brekkie Linda and I went up to the Lido deck to survey the city.

OMG the smog was so thick you could eat it however the smells were not to bad and even though it was only about 9 am the temp was up in the high 30’s C (100F).

Linda and I decided we would go ashore and get a cab for an hour or so and have a look around. We had to take the shuttle from the terminal to the Green gate to leave the Port area. We noticed Mum Dolly just about to go out alone with no water to walk around. I pulled rank on her and told her she was coming with us in the cab and she agreed.

We were mobbed by taxi drivers and a policeman had to come over blowing his whistle and waving a big stick to get them to back off us. I was a bit concerned for Dolly as she is a frail 93 year old lady. We got a cab which turned out to not be air conditioned and set out to have a look around. The traffic was chaotic and the sound of horns blowing was deafening.

After an hour we asked to go back to the ship as we were soaking wet with perspiration and had swallowed a ton of thick smog and diesel fumes. Boy oh boy what an experience.

We joined Dolly for lunch and she thanked us for taking us with her and she really appreciated going with us.

We went out later on a sunset and night lights tour on an air-conditioned bus which was very enjoyable. It’s a pity the roads were so bumpy and the windows were scratched as only one about 5 photos turned out clear.

We got back just in time for dinner and had an enjoyable meal and then up to the Crows Nest for Drinks before bed.

Friday 20 March 2015

Linda and I had a quick brekkie before meeting up with Russell and Susan for our Highlights of Mumbai 5 hour tour. The tour was enjoyable and the coach was air-conditioned and the windows were clean and clear.

I guess for me the Gandhi Museum was the highlight and then the Prince of Wales Museum. We went to a bridge overlooking the laundry which was huge and unlike the laundry in Cochin we went to we couldn't go in.

After the tour I headed straight to my cabin to shower, wash my hair and change my clothes before meeting up with the gang for a well deserved drink before a late lunch.
I had a long nanna nap before going up to Happy Hour. I used up my 2 free Pinnacle Grill passes by taking Linda to dinner and as it is her birthday the day I get off in Dubai I arranged with the staff to surprise her with a cake and we sang Happy Birthday. Linda was surprised.

We all met up at the Crows Nest for a few nightcaps. Tomorrow I have to start packing and you all know by now how much I hate that. Yes the time for me to leave is only a couple of days away.

Saturday 21 March 2015

Today is a sea day as we cruise towards Dubai and after brekkie we had the pirate drill as we go through the waters towards Dubai. We had to go out of our cabins and sit on the floor of the hallway until the Captain gives the all clear.

I took a cushion to sit on. Of course we had old farts roaming around lost and trying to step over other folks legs and not knowing what is going on. In a real situation I don’t think even the pirates would even want them.

I started the packing and was amazed just how much I got done. For the past week I have had my laundry returned folded so it was easy to pack as they fold clothes much better than me.

There was another tropical fruit display on the Lido deck at lunch time so I had a beaut feed of Pawpaw, Mango and Banana with ice-cream for lunch.

After lunch I had a great nanna nap and got up to the Happy Hour just before it finished.

At 7 pm Susan hosted a farewell party for me in her suite with about 15 friends invited. Even Mum Dolly came and enjoyed herself.

Dinner was the usual good time and then we adjourned to the Crows Nest for nightcaps. I was in bed before midnight as we had to put the time back by 30 minutes.

Sunday 22 March 2015

Another calm sea day as we cruise towards Dubai. Tomorrow the cruise will be over and I leave the ship for the airport just after lunch.

I had brekkie with Linda and then did some more packing before going up to the Lido ‘Office’ to hold court. At 11.30 I went to the Mariners Brunch for the folk leaving the ship tomorrow in Dubai. The Brunch was great and I sat with the Poms (John and Christine) so we had a beaut time.

I spent the afternoon down loading photos and didn't have time to have a nana nap. At 6 pm I went with Russell, Linda and Susan to a Murder Mystery dinner in the Pinnacle Grill which provided heaps of intrigue and laughs.

As tonight is my last night on board I had to have my luggage outside my cabin by midnight, so I only had a few quick drinks and say good bye to the regulars.

The band played G’Bye G’Bye for me as I left the Crows Nest at about 11 pm.

Monday 23 March 2015

I had my last brekkie with Linda and as it was her birthday I arranged with the boys to sing Happy Birthday to her at the brekkie table because I will not be on board tonight when it would be normally be sung. She got a big surprise with this special attention and the chocolate birthday cake.

I finished my packing, exchanged photos with Susan and went up to the Crows Nest to watch the arrival in Dubai. It was a bit smoggy however it seemed to clear a little during the day. We had farewell drinks in the Ocean Bar before I went up to the Lido to have my last lunch.

It was so sad with many of the kids saying “Papaku please stay, we will miss you.” Just as I finished my lunch Franz (Susan’s husband) came on board and it was great to catch up with him again. Franz will be on the ship until Fort Lauderdale.

I left the ship just after 2 pm and the formalities of customs were a breeze and my driver was waiting to wiz me to the airport. The Dubai Airport is so large and I found the check-in place for Emirates Airline.

Well I was 2kg over with my check-in luggage but was 8 kg over with my 2 carry-on bags. (Well Papaku did buy a few things during the 7 weeks).

Unbeknown to me the airline recently changed its policy on hand luggage and only allows one piece. The lady asked which one of the hand did I want to check in. This caused a problem as I told her I would have to sort things out as I had gear for the overnight at the hotel and also  to change into after my shower in the Qantas Club Brisbane before my flight to Cairns as well as all my meds.

She felt sorry for me and then escorted me through the ‘luggage police’ and on to security so I will have my 2 pieces with me. She was most kind to me.

Then I had to catch a train to Terminal 3 and then find the entrance lift to the Hotel. All went very well although I did ask directions and everyone was most helpful.

The reception young lady was excellent and escorted me to my room. She then arranged for one of her staff to show me around the terminal so I could go duty free shopping and a place to eat.

I ate at a beaut place and had tempura prawns. It was so quiet there and the Filipino Staff made me so welcome. I had a Guinness and a glass of wine with the meal. I had a look at the duty free shops but didn't buy as I will get my booze at the Brissie airport duty free.

I was in bed by 10 pm.

Tuesday 24 March 2015

I had a good night’s sleep in this deluxe room and awoke early at 5.30am and took advantage of the free Wi-Fi to catch up on emails and get this update off to you.

At 9 am I will be escorted to the departure for my flight with priority boarding. It will be a 14 and a half hour flight to Brisbane.

OMG this airport is huge. I had priority boarding and settled into my isle seat very well.

A lady sat in the window seat and we had a bonus with no body sitting in the middle seat. Nicole was my new friend’s name and she worked for the UN and was going home to Australia for holidays.

What an interesting and well-travelled lady, we talked for about 5 hours exchanging storied while we had a few Gin and Tonics, our meal and a couple of red wines.

I watched a few movies before getting a few hours of shut eye. Overall the flight was very comfortable, the service excellent, and the friendly staff ensuring everyone was well fed and watered. I think Mr Qantas could learn a few good service lessons from Mr Emirates.

Wednesday 25 March 2015

The sunrise was fantastic as we approached Brisbane. We arrived at 6.15 am local time and were out in the public area by 6.45 am. That time included buying duty free and going through the official process of customs etc. I like Brissie International as the process is so swift and efficient.

I checked my luggage in for the flight to Cairns, then caught the shuttle bus over to the Domestic Terminal. I went straight up to the Qantas Club and had a shower and shave.

Feeling fresh and like a new man I had a light brekkie read the local papers and then went out to board the flight. I had a great Business class seat with an empty seat beside me, so heaps of room to spread out. It was a postcard perfect day for flying all the way to Cairns over the next 2 hours.

The Qantas staff on this flight was excellent and it was an enjoyable flight with a nice meal and a bottle of Red. The patchwork quilt look of the green sugar cane fields was a great welcome back home sight as we approached Cairns.

I was met at the airport by my friend Dan who drove me home.

We had a coffee before Dan left and I was able to start the unpacking. It is always good to return home.

My sincere thanks to all the Officers and Crew of the Ms Amsterdam and also my friends on board for making this a fantastic cruise and holiday.
